The history of the Canal
The Canal du Midi, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, began to be dug in 1666, and was completely completed in 1681, in just 15 years!
It measures 240km, has 65 locks and numerous remarkable structures such as aqueducts, dam bridges, etc.
Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1996, it is the pride of the Occitan people.
Typical villages
When you go along the Canal du Midi, you can admire many charming little villages.
Start with Castelnaudary, the capital of Cassoulet, and discover traces of the town's past: the Saint-Michel Collegiate Church, the Notre-Dame-de-Pitié Chapel, the Moulin de Cugarel and the private mansions. After these beautiful visits in pursuit of history, enjoy a delicious traditional meal in one of the many restaurants in the port.
Then, stop in Carcassonne and discover the medieval city. Walk the cobbled streets to discover the shops, visit the Château Comtal, the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, admire the view from the ramparts... Then, stroll through the streets of the city, treat yourself to a little break in one of the bars from Place Carnot, and head back towards Square Gambetta and its reflecting pool.
Then discover the charming village of La Redorte and visit the L’Avenir cooperative cellar, dating from 1931, and its Vins de Pays and the AOC Minervois. Discover historic buildings like the Building, a former Templar possession of the Douzens commandery, then a wine cellar later, it is today an inhabited private property. To continue your journey, go to Homps, 1km7 from your tourist residence the Château de Jouarres***. A pretty little town in Minervois, known for its port on the Canal du Midi and its pleasant pleasure lake. Stroll along the port on foot or by bike, taste one of the many AOP Minervois wines, treat yourself to a trip on the Canal on a cruise boat, swim in Lake Jouarres...
Finally, move on to Roquebrune-sur-Argens, a pretty hilltop village with a rich historical past. Stroll through its narrow streets and typically Provençal picturesque squares. And don’t miss the village specialty: chocolate, and more particularly the delicious Rocher (a lavender honey nougat coated with a thin layer of chocolate).
